Geometricas Hot Spring – Chile

Termas Geometricas

Our November featured hot spring Termas Geometricas is a place where nature encountered the human hand, with its pristine location and easy access makes this an unparalleled experience. It is without any doubt the best one in Chile located in the IX Region, Araucania is a place worth the visit! I loved this place because our son could actually swim in the pools and you couls easily spend all day relaxing there.

The unparalleled Termas Geometricas are most intriguing and more thoughtfully developed hot springs in all of Chile. The architect German Sol borrows heavily from Japanese themes to raised wood walkaways and decks going to triangular slate-lined pools nestled at the bottom of the vertical fern and most-covered cliffs. The massive wood timbers are painted red and black, and contrast in a remarkable way with the green hues of the forest ravine.

The magnificent setting in a deep forest gorge lies between the volcanoes of recently active Villarrica and quieter Quetrupillan. The unique design, abundance of pools, and location in a narrow gorge with rushing stream makes this one of the Andes higher quality hot spring experiences.

To get there follow the paved road from Villarrica to the small town of Licanray, drive eastward around the north shore of Laguna Calafquen, and continue to the very small town of Coñaripe; there watch the red-painted road sign for the turnoff. A narrow dirt road leads about 15-kms through rural homesteads and then into more pristine forests. You will first come to the Termas Vergara, follow the road upwards a few kilometers, and then turn left at the sign for a narrower winding road back into the canyon. The route is clearly marked by road signs.

Seventeen slate-lined triangular-shaped pools parallel the cliff walls and stream. Most of these are only one meter deep. The temperatures vary between 34 and 41 degrees Celsius, with most of them kept at about 36 to 38 degrees. Small changing huts are scattered along the canyon, making it convenient to store belongings. The termas are open from 10:00a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and shorter hours during the winter season. They do not accept credit cards, it is cash only and they have a basic snack bar with sandwiches and some beverages.
