FATHER´S DAY DESSERT DON PEDRO FROM ARGENTINA

With Father´s day approaching I thought it would be nice to make something special, and came upon making a Don Pedro dessert, which is very simple yet sophisticated. This dessert consists of ice cream, accompanied with crackers, fruits, nuts, or any variety of toppings, but the secret ingredient is a shot of whisky. Happy Father’s Day!

In South America whisky is very popular; people there consider it as a high status drink. In Peru for example they love Johnnie Walker red label, black label, double black label, gold label, platinum label, blue label, etc… Whisky in South America is expensive, it is all imported. There is only one country to our knowledge that produces whisky and it is Uruguay with their Dunbar Rare old whisky since 1981. Some countries produce spirits such as Pisco (Peru and Chile), wine (Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Peru), and Rum is widespread in many Latin American countries such as Panama with their famous Don Abuelo rum, Guatemala has Ron Zacapa, Venezuela has Santa Teresa Rum, and Peru has Ocucaje rum, Costa Rica and Venezuela produce vast amounts of rum as well.

Whereas Scotch or Whisky is imported, expensive, an item of high society, which is remarkably funny and ironic because in the source countries this is a lower class drink. It is appealing to South Americans because it is exotic, although lately Latin American has become more open to trade agreements especially with the Scotch whisky industry.

Don Pedro dessert is from Argentina, and accordingly it started with a man named Don Pedro who liked to eat ice cream every day for dessert, but he also like a shot of whisky. Can’t place any blame for that, and if you tried it on a weekly basis you too may become like Don Pedro. In a way to disguise the whisky he decided to ask the restaurateur to add the whisky to his ice cream, and Don Pedro dessert was born.

In honor to all fathers that enjoy a good whisky, and sometimes ice cream, we present to you Don Pedro dessert from Argentina to the world.
